Released in 2016, the Nike iD Mercurial Superfly IV "Heritage" R9 is a landmark Nike iD release — the first time the iconic 1998 Mercurial Vapor colourways were ever made available on Nike iD. A celebration of Ronaldo (R9) and the boot that changed football forever, this Heritage iD drop succeeded the Mercurial Vapor XV (2013, 15th anniversary) and arrived as Nike unveiled the new Mercurial Superfly V — honouring El Fenómeno once more at a milestone moment for the Mercurial line.

In 1998, Ronaldo wore the original Mercurial Vapor I in the iconic Silver / Yellow / Blue colourway at the FIFA World Cup France — the boot's debut on the world stage. R9 finished as the tournament's top scorer with 4 goals, and the Mercurial became the most iconic speed boot in football history. The Heritage iD offered four colourway options drawing from that original 1998 design: the iconic Silver / Yellow / Blue, Black / White, Black / Blue, and a White / Silver with Volt Swoosh modern twist. All built on the Mercurial Superfly IV platform with its Dynamic Fit collar and carbon fibre soleplate.
